GEORGE JONES (POSSUM)

A.K.A. the possum is nothing but a golden legend; with over 50 years of performing , 50 #1 Hits. Thats one #1 year and by anyones standards that is amazing, especially considering Jones' personal problems with just plain ole raising hell and drankin.  "The Grand Tour" "Who's going to fill their shoes"  "The Right Left Hand" , "Tennessee Whiskey" "The Rock" "We are Gonna' Hold On " and of course "Choices" that brought him his second Grammy in the late 90s. By most accounts, George Jones is the finest vocalist in the recorded history of country music. Initially, he was a hardcore honky tonker in the tradition of Hank Williams, but over the course of his career he developed an affecting, nuanced ballad style. He never left the top of the country charts, even as he suffered innumerable personal and professional difficulties. Only Eddy Arnold had more Top Ten hits, and Jones always stayed closer to the roots of hardcore country throughout his entire career. Jones continued to have Top Ten hits regularly until 1987, when country radio became dominated by newer artists; ironically, the artists that kept him off the charts -- singers like Randy Travis, Keith Whitley, and Dwight Yoakam -- were heavily influenced by Jones himself. No doubt Georges' absolute BEST song ever , my favorite and his signature song has to be "He stopped loving her today".
